Abdominal Ultrasound

A detailed, radiation-free assessment of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys.

Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the organs in the upper abdomen. It is safe, painless and does not use radiation, making it an ideal first-line investigation for many abdominal symptoms.

What it can help assess

  • Upper abdominal pain, bloating or indigestion
  • Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation
  • Fatty liver and other liver changes
  • Kidney stones, cysts and kidney size
  • Abnormal liver or kidney blood tests

Clear images, for clear answers.

Preparing for your scan

Please do not eat for 6 hours before your scan, so the gallbladder can be seen clearly. You may drink water and take your usual medicines. If kidneys or bladder are also being assessed, you may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder.

What to expect

  • The scan usually takes 20–30 minutes
  • A water-based gel is applied and a hand-held probe is moved gently over the skin
  • Images are reviewed by a consultant-led team
  • A written report is provided and the findings are explained to you
